Scared to death

by: Amanda on Fri, Oct 05 2007

I am 22 years old and i have lost 60% of my hair and both my eyebrows.

I first noticed something was wrong on my wedding day, just over two years ago. My hairdresser noticed a small patch at the back of my head and I just laughed it off and forgot all about it. About 3months later my hair started falling out in clumps. I put it all down to stress. It continued for a couple of months then eased off.

A few months later it all started again so I went and saw a dermatologist They did a biopsy and I then found out I had Alopecia Areata. I was so upset. I really felt alone and that no one would understand how I felt. I started to feel guilty, because even though this condition doesnt pose any real threat on my health, mentally this is really hard.

I dont feel I have really come to terms with it and there are days when I dont know if I can live with this for the rest of my life.

It is one year since I have offically been diagnosed and 2 years since my hair first started falling out. Its has been hard and long journey and life has not been easy. I bought a wig, however I dont like to where it and I have had my eyebrows tattooed on. I am getting to the stage where it is getting too hard to hide all my bald patches. I think i will need to shave my head. I am concerned about the reactions of friends and work collegaues. I guess this is just a huge trial for me to get through and I hope that one day i will be able to be at peace with my condition.
