Results of a stroke

by: RG on Mon, Jul 23 2007

I had an ischemic stroke. Apparently a very slight one since I am almost 100% back (maybe 97%). I feel very lucky especially when I see other stroke victims at rehab. Thank you God.

What my real reason for writing this comment is some things I have noticed during rehab.

Although most of the patients are being cared for by care-givers who are trained to help, it is the family, friends, etc., who are not trained. (They do not understand.)

I THINK THE FAMILY MEMBERS SHOULD GO THROUGH A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TRAINING. The family (or friends) get frustrated, annoyed, etc., with the patient and in return the patient gets humiliated, embarassed, etc., because the family/friends do not understand what is going on with the patient.

I guess that would take care of some of the things I saw happening, Just a few examples: I saw a lady who going to therapy (doing so much better) with young girl (daughter or granddaughter). The girl was so frustrated with the older woman who was almost running with the walker to keep up.

Another case was when I was still in rehab. I would play cards with a woman whose husband stayed with her most of time. That was lovely, but detrimental in a way. He would help her even before she asked. He was also trying to help me and I had to tell him that I had to learn myself and to be patient with me. He thought he was helping her but in the long run he was not helping.

I know this is long winded and I have many more stories, but I’m sure you get the gist.
